Rising Irish director Lee Cronin is set to make waves in the horror world once again with the Friday release of THE MUMMY, an audacious and twisted retelling of a classic monster tale that’s already garnering rave reviews from devoted horror fans. This latest venture marks another significant milestone for the Dublin-born filmmaker who has rapidly established himself as one of contemporary horror’s most compelling voices.
Cronin first burst onto the scene in 2019 with THE HOLE IN THE GROUND, an atmospheric chiller that unfolded across the Irish countryside and caught the attention of acclaimed distributor A24, who brought it to American audiences. That breakthrough performance led to a major opportunity: writing and directing EVIL DEAD RISE in 2023, the fifth installment in the legendary horror franchise and its first new entry in a decade. The film’s dual success—both commercially and critically—cemented Cronin’s reputation as a visionary in the genre and resulted in the exciting announcement that two additional EVIL DEAD movies are in development, with Cronin taking on an executive producer role.
THE MUMMY, which Cronin wrote himself, centers on a young girl who mysteriously reappears after vanishing for eight years. What begins as a joyful family reunion quickly descends into something far more sinister, as the girl’s broken family discovers that her return is far from the blessing they’d hoped for. The film promises to deliver the kind of unsettling horror that has become Cronin’s trademark, exploring the darkness that lurks beneath moments of supposed salvation.
Complementing Cronin’s vision is Irish actor Jack Reynor, a seasoned collaborator with the horror genre who previously starred in A24’s haunting 2019 film MIDSOMMAR, directed by Ari Aster. With this combination of directorial talent and strong casting, THE MUMMY appears poised to satisfy the appetite of horror enthusiasts everywhere.
