THE HISTORY OF SOUND will hit theaters on September 12

Paul Mescal continues his impressive ascent in Hollywood with a leading role in the highly anticipated historical gay romance, THE HISTORY OF SOUND, set to hit theaters on September 12.

Fresh off its debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it garnered a 65% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this Mubi acquisition sees Mescal star as Lionel opposite Josh O’Connor’s David. The film, a passion project for director Oliver Hermanus who first attached Mescal and O’Connor to the script in 2021, tells the poignant story of two young men who fall in love at the New England Conservatory during World War I, only to reunite years later for a profound journey across Northeastern America, collecting folk ballads.

Critics are already singling out Mescal’s performance, with Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond hailing it as potentially “Mescal’s best work in films yet.” This impactful role further solidifies Mescal’s diverse and critically acclaimed recent career, which includes his Academy Award-nominated turn in AFTERSUN (2022), the acclaimed ALL OF US STRANGERS (2023), and his upcoming blockbuster GLADIATOR II (2024), demonstrating his range from intimate dramas to grand epics.

As THE HISTORY OF SOUND prepares for its North American release, potentially making a pit stop at the Toronto International Film Festival, it stands as another testament to Mescal’s discerning eye for compelling narratives and his undeniable talent.

When Colin Farrell had to choose between a guaranteed paycheck on a hit TV show and a one-in-a-million shot at Hollywood, everyone told him he was insane. His friends said don't do it. His family couldn't understand it. He did it anyway.

Now in BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER (in select UK/Ireland cinemas Oct 17, Netflix Oct 29), he plays a man who understands risk better than anyone. Because Farrell's been there. He bet everything on himself when he had nothing, and that decision changed everything.
