Murphy wins Best Actor at Oscars 2024

Cillian Murphy

Cork native Cillian Murphy made history on Sunday night becoming the first Irish-born actor to claim BEST ACTOR at the Oscars for his career-defining role in OPPENHEIMER. As predicted, the film dominated proceedings, winning best picture, best director for Christopher Nolan, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. Murphy is the third Irish actor to win the best actor Oscar, following Daniel Day-Lewis, who was born in London but holds Irish citizenship, and Barry Fitzgerald who won in 1945. Murphy thanked Nolan and Emma Thomas, his producer, as well as his team and his family. He ended his speech by saying he was a “very very proud Irishman”.

Máiréad Tyers

In the newly-released EXTRAORDINARY Season 2 trailer, BELFAST actress Máiréad Tyers inhabits a world where everyone gains a superpower when they turn 18. Written by Co Fermanagh writer Emma Moran, the supernatural series works largely because of Tyers, who is fantastic at communicating the sheer rubbishness of your mid-20s, when you’re too skint to graduate to adulthood properly but too grown up to slum it like an eternal student. What a painful in-between period – and what a great performance by Tyers. EXTRAORDINARY Season 2 is now streaming on Hulu.
