Without Covid, it could all have been so different for the Corkonian screenwriter behind WOLFWALKERS, but he’s still looking forward to linking up with his colleagues from the Cartoon Saloon studio.
The 48th ceremony of the Annie Awards, honouring excellence in the field of world animation, was held on 16 April. It was a special night for Kilkenny-based studio Cartoon Saloon, the outfit behind the making of the groundbreaking animation flick WOLFWALKERS, directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and co–produced with Luxembourg’s Mélusine Productions and France’s Folivari.
The Irish film studio Cartoon Saloon has released a limited-edition book about their Oscar-nominated animation WOLFWALKERS. Wolfwalkers, which currently available on Apple’s streaming service, tells the tale of a 17th-century hunter who has a change of heart when she travels to Ireland to wipe out the last pack of wolves.
WOLFWALKERS, made by Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, has been nominated for an Oscar. Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart’s Wolfwalkers, produced in Kilkenny, has been nominated as best animated feature for the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards.This is the Irish studio’s fourth nomination in the category and, locked in an apparent two-horse race with Pixar’s Soul, offers them their best chance yet to win the prize.
The Irish director talks the timelessness of hand-drawn animation and, how, when he started working on WOLFWALKERS years ago, he did not foresee its themes of polarization and otherization becoming depressingly timely in 2020.
CARTOON SALOON’s animated feature WOLFWALKERS is tipped by industry bible, VARIETY MAGAZINE, to win an Oscar next year as audiences are flocking to find out why. The film was No. 1 at the Irish box office this weekend and 3rd overall in UK/Ireland.
