Daryl McCormack is on the rise

The Irish actor’s performance as a sympathetic sex worker in GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE this summer “has definitely opened up doors for me,” he said. Next up is the Apple TV+ series BAD SISTERS. McCormack grew up in Nenagh, in County Tipperary, the son of a white Irish mother and a Black American father he rarely saw. But his paternal grandfather, Percy Thomas, who runs a theater company in Maryland, helped fill that void.

Mescal in GOD’S CREATURES

A24 has released the first official trailer for its upcoming psychological thriller GOD’S CREATURES starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson. The film, which debuted in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, is directed by Saela Davis & Anna Rose Holmer (The Fits). Set in a windswept fishing village, the film follows a mother who is torn between protecting her beloved son and her own sense of right and wrong. A lie she tells for him rips apart their family and close-knit community in this tense, sweepingly emotional epic. Irish actress Aisling Franciosi also stars.

HOLE IN THE HEAD review

Greystones filmmaker Dean Kavanagh made his cinema debut with his first narrative feature, HOLE IN THE HEAD, at the Irish Film Institute on Friday, August 12. The experimental director used the ongoing pandemic and repeated lockdowns of years past to both create and film his piece, using the natural landscape of Wicklow as one of many backdrops to his story.

JOYRIDE review

JOYRIDE sees Irish teen Mully (Charlie Reid) unwittingly setting off on a cross-country roadtrip with struggling mother Joy (Olivia Colman) after he steals the taxi cab she was planning to take. Neither of their lives are going too well; Mully has run away from his father James (Lochlann Ó Mearáin) after swiping the charity money raised in his mother’s honor which James had stolen. Meanwhile, Joy is desperate to leave her life behind and give away her new baby (whom she later names Robin). With both their futures unclear, the pair sets off on a journey across Ireland in pursuit of a happier life.

Irish actresses dominate ANDOR

Three Irish actresses are set to steal the show in a new Star Wars series on Disney+. The series, ANDOR, features Fiona Shaw, Genevieve O’Reilly and Denise Gough in leading roles. Two-time Olivier award-winning Clare-born actress, Denise Gough is set for a villainous role as imperial officer, Dedra Meero. Cork actress Fiona Shaw, who is well known for her roles as Petunia Dursley in the HARRY POTTER film franchise and Carolyn Martens in KILLING EVE is also to make her STAR WARS debut.
