Dunne on Kin Season 2

The television series KIN is one of the most internationally acclaimed Irish shows in recent memory (alongside the hilarious comedy DERRY GIRLS), in no small part because of its incredible onscreen talent. The most surprising star of Kin, though, is Clare Dunne. Dunne plays Amanda Kinsella, who begins the show as a put-upon and caring mother struggling to raise her children Jamie and Anthony safely while her husband’s family runs a crime empire in Ireland and stumbles into a gang war.

Negga earns Tony nomination

Actor Ruth Negga from Limerick has been nominated for a Tony Award. Negga is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her performance in William Shakespeare’s MACBETH. She stars as Lady Macbeth opposite James Bond star Daniel Craig. The production has received three Tony nominations. She says she is “beyond thrilled” to be nominated for her role.

Making CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS

It seems Billie Jean King really did say, “Pressure is a privilege.” The team behind the imminent adaptation of Sally Rooney’s CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS have reason to ponder the tennis legend’s durable observation. NORMAL PEOPLE, broadcast in the spring of 2020, wasn’t any sort of everyday hit. It was a sensation. That take on Sally Rooney’s second novel ended up as the defining cultural artefact of the first Covid lockdown. Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones, breakout stars of the series, are now fronting films at Sundance and Cannes. Rooney’s status as voice of a generation was further elevated. One could forgive Lenny Abrahamson, director and executive producer of both series, for feeling a few jitters.

Alison Oliver 101

Alison Oliver absolutely loved NORMAL PEOPLE. The TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s sophomore novel with its emotionally earnest performances and charged sexual energy felt like a “revelation” to the twenty-something actor, who agrees that the hit series was much more than just the sum of its parts. Given the meteoric success of its predecessor, the bar is already set quite high for the new Element Pictures’ production. While CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS is indeed a “cousin, that shares an aesthetic tone” with NORMAL PEOPLE, it is an entirely separate story, says Oliver.

Dunbar directs Beckett

He’s known for his no nonsense role as Superintendent Ted Hastings in LINE OF DUTY, and now Irish actor Adrian Dunbar is bringing his talents to Liverpool. The star who comes from County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland is also a writer and is well known for his stage roles. But for Samuel Beckett: In Confinement he will be behind the scenes, directing several plays by the author for a festival in Liverpool.

DERRY GIRLS star Peter Campion is all loved up away from the hit Channel 4 show. The actor, who plays the role of the “sexy priest” is married to RED ROCK actress Valerie O’Connor, who played Nikki Grogan, and together they have two kids. Both Peter and Valerie have had very successful careers on screens, so it no surprise that work comes up as a topic of conversation at home.

CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS

RTÉ has announced that the eagerly awaited TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s acclaimed debut novel CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS will begin on May 18. The series will air over six weeks, with two new episodes each Wednesday night. The drama follows the global success of the TV adaptation of Rooney’s book NORMAL PEOPLE in 2020. The series tells the story of a 21-year-old Dublin-based college student called Frances, who, along with her friend Bobbi, becomes involved in the life of a married couple, Melissa and Nick.

DERRY GIRLS extended finale

Channel 4 has announced an additional, extended length episode of DERRY GIRLS. The special will broadcast later in the same week as the Series 3 finale, scheduled to air on 17th May at 9pm. Titled The Agreement, it picks up a year on from the end of Series 3 proper and focuses around the Good Friday Agreement referendum, which brought widespread peace and stability to Northern Ireland after decades of bloodshed.
