Murphy wins Best Actor at Oscars 2024

Cork native Cillian Murphy made history on Sunday night becoming the first Irish-born actor to claim BEST ACTOR at the Oscars for his career-defining role in OPPENHEIMER. As predicted, the film dominated proceedings, winning best picture, best director for Christopher Nolan, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. Murphy is the third Irish actor to win the best actor Oscar, following Daniel Day-Lewis, who was born in London but holds Irish citizenship, and Barry Fitzgerald who won in 1945. Murphy thanked Nolan and Emma Thomas, his producer, as well as his team and his family. He ended his speech by saying he was a “very very proud Irishman”.

Brosnan honoured at Oscar Wilde Awards

The Oscar Wilde Awards were hosted March 7 to honor the Irish in entertainment, with special honors going to Pierce Brosnan, Molly Shannon, and Richie Baneham. The event kicked off when Cillian Murphy, Oscar-nominated for OPPENHEIMER, popped by on his way to the Academy’s dinner for Best Actor nominees. Brosnan, an actor, film producer, philanthropist, artist and two-time Golden Globe Award nominee was honoured for his “rich and extensive career in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes as a producer.”

Oscar-nominated Irish actor Stephen Rea (THE CRYING GAME, MICHAEL COLLINS) will be honored with the Irish Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement for his “outstanding contribution to the Irish and international screen industry,” the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) unveiled on Wednesday. Rea will be presented with the honor in the presence of family, friends and industry colleagues at the 21st IFTA Awards ceremony, taking place on Saturday, April 20 at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre. The evening will be hosted by Baz Ashmawy, one of Ireland’s most popular TV personalities.

BRENDAN GLEESON’S FAREWELL TO HUGHES’S documents a poignant reunion of musicians, dancers, and singers at the now-closed venue. Filmed over five days in January 2022, the documentary interweaves interviews with archival footage, capturing the essence and impact of Hughes’s Pub on Dublin’s traditional music scene and its cultural heritage. To some it was an unassuming pub on a side street in Dublin’s city centre. To musicians, dancers, singers and listeners, Hughes’s was a mecca of traditional Irish music for more than 35 years. After it closes its doors for the final time, actor  returns to it to commemorate its invaluable legacy.

Liam Neeson for NAKED GUN reboot

The upcoming Liam Neeson-led reboot of the iconic 1988 comedy film, THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD, is finally moving forward. Paramount Pictures has revealed that the upcoming reboot has secured a premiere date in July 2025. The film, which will be co-produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins via Fuzzy Door, is set for release on July 18 next year, per Variety. THE LONELY ISLAND member Akiva Schaffer, who is set to direct the reboot. In 2022, Neeson joked about joining the reboot, quipping that it could make or break his career: “I’ve been approached by Seth MacFarlane and Paramount Studios to maybe resurrect the Naked Gun films. It’ll either finish my career or bring it in another direction. I honestly don’t know.”

QUINTESSENTIALLY IRISH preview

Details are emerging about a brand-new documentary, entitled QUINTESSENTIALLY IRISH. The film celebrates what it is to be Irish with celebrities and politicians offering their take on the Emerald Isle. It explores some of Ireland’s most beautiful sights and famous exports, including the origins of whiskey, Guinness, horseracing, Gaelic sports and Ireland’s oldest inhabited castle at Dunsany. Interviewees include Navan-born Pierce Brosnan, Bob Geldof, Andrew Scott, Sharon Horgan, Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, and Prince Albert II of Monaco, discussing the Irish heritage of his mother, the Oscar winning actress Grace Kelly.

In a new ALL OF US STRANGERS preview, the film’s screenwriter and director, Andrew Haigh discusses a sequence in which Andrew Scott re-unites with his long deceased parents, played by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy. In his narration of the moment, Haigh noted that he filmed it in his actual childhood home and that it was a magical experience to get to shoot there. “It felt like a haunted house,” he said.
