AN CAILÍN CIÚIN seals U.S distribution

The hit Irish-language drama AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) has secured North American distribution as it continues its push to make the shortlist for Best International Feature Film at next year’s Oscars. Last month, the Colm Bairéad-directed coming-of-age story was selected by the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) as Ireland’s entry for the Best International Feature Film race at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Farrell wins best actor at Venice

Colin Farrell has won best actor at the 79th Venice International Film Festival for his performance in Martin McDonagh’s THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN. McDonagh took best screenplay for a film that received rave reviews and tumultuous ovations following its premiere early last week. Farrell must now be in a strong position to secure his first Academy Award nomination. Gleeson is also likely to compete — either in best actor or in best supporting actor. The two men reunite with McDonagh for the first time since working together on the much-admired IN BRUGES 14 years ago.

Saoirse Ronan in SEE HOW THEY RUN

In SEE HOW THEY RUN, the Irish actor, best known for bringing Jo March to life in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of LITTLE WOMEN, plays an ambitious police officer paired with seasoned, yet unorthodox, detective (Sam Rockwell), in a ‘whodunnit’ murder mystery comedy where the scene of the crime is a theatre. For his 100th film, Irish legend Liam Neeson is set to star in Oscar-winning director Neil Jordan’s upcoming noir thriller MARLOWE. Farrell’s Venice triumph

John Michael McDonagh’s THE FORGIVEN

THE FORGIVEN is written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, whose debut feature was the glorious THE GUARD in 2011. The film follows David and Jo Henninger (Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain, respectively), a self-aggrandising husband and wife spending the weekend at their friend’s mansion in Morocco. After striking down a local boy with their car, the movie follows the effect the incident has on both the visitors and the locals. Things get more complicated when the father of the boy wishes for David to come with him to bury his son.

DERRY GIRLS S3 release date

 

DERRY GIRLS returns to Netflix on October 7. Netflix’s official Twitter posted a tweet stating it was hard to say goodbye to the show, saying the “final season of our beloved Derry Girls arrives October 7 on Netflix (outside The UK & Ireland).” Last fall, creator and writer Lisa McGee confirmed on Twitter the third season would be the last, and that it was always the plan to have the show end after three seasons. “Derry Girls is a coming of age story…a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me,” McGee said, also commenting it was an honor to write the show, and she was proud of what it had accomplished and achieved.

Michael Flatley in BLACKBIRD

 

Michael Flatley has urged young people to “go for it” as he spoke about his motivation for making his debut feature film, saying people had told him it was “impossible”. The dancer and choreographer, 64, has written, directed and also stars in the spy thriller BLACKBIRD, in which he plays former MI6 operative Victor Blackley who is drawn back into a world of espionage he left behind. The film screened at the Monaco Streaming Film Festival last year, where Flatley picked up the best actor award.

Derry Girl Louisa Harland will star in an upcoming Disney+ series, THE BALLAD OF RENEGADE NELL. Harland’s character “ends up on an extraordinary adventure after she is framed for murder – a twist of fate that has far bigger consequences than Nell could ever dream of,” the outlet states. The series follows Nell, an 18th century young woman, as she finds herself “unwittingly becoming the most famous highwaywoman in the country.”
