Andrew Scott makes theatre history

Andrew Scott has been named best actor at the Critics’ Circle theatre awards for playing every role in VANYA, adapted by Simon Stephens. In February, the star won best actor at the Critics’ Circle film awards for his performance in Andrew Haigh’s film ALL OF US STRANGERS. It is the first time both awards have been won by the same actor in the same year. The FLEABAG star took all eight roles in the solo show VANYA, which ran at the Duke of York’s theatre in London, directed by Sam Yates, and was released in cinemas last month. A plethora of Irish stars join Liam Neeson in the upcoming Northern Ireland drama IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS. Ciaran Hinds, Kelly Condon and Jack Gleeson all star in the film, released March 29. Hoping to leave his dark past behind him, former assassin Finbar Murphy (Neeson) leads a quiet life in a coastal Irish town, far from the political violence that grips the rest of the country. When menacing terrorists show up, Finbar soon discovers that one of them has been abusing a local girl. Drawn into an increasingly vicious game of cat and mouse, he must choose between exposing his secret identity and defending his friends and neighbors.

DERRY GIRLS and BRIDGERTON star Nicola Coughlan is excellent alongside IT’S A SIN‘s Lydia West in her new sitcom about two millennial best friends. Coughlan plays Maggie with big bombastic take-all-the-energy-in-the-room aplomb while West takes on the classic role of “bestie who has a place of work and doesn’t mind their friend always visiting them there”. But their 10-year friendship is sorely tested when Maggie’s bipolar disorder makes an unwelcome return, pitching her from manic highs to deep lows. BIG MOOD, drops this week (10pm, 28 March, Channel 4).

Murphy for PEAKY BLINDERS movie

The forthcoming PEAKY BLINDERS movie, being filmed in the West Midlands, is due to start shooting in September. The show’s creator, Steven Knight, has confirmed that Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Thomas Shelby. It is being shot in Digbeth, amid plans to grow the film industry in the city with 760 new jobs. He also praised Murphy’s performance in OPPENHEIMER, saying that the Best Actor Academy Award he won earlier this month “was so deserved.”

SUGAR Star Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for THE PENGUIN a spinoff series of THE BATMAN coming this fall to Max. “The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.

Shot exclusively in Ireland, the second season finds Elliot (Dornan) and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) hoping to unravel the mysteries surrounding Elliot’s identity. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when confronted with the dangerous aftermath of Elliot’s past. Dornan has been recently been announced as the lead actor in the upcoming Netflix crime drama THE UNDERTOW, where he’ll be the latest major star to take on the challenge of playing identical twins.

Brosnan joins BLACK BAG cast

Director Steven Soderbergh is assembling quite the cast for his upcoming spy thriller, BLACK BAG, with Pierce Brosnan joining fellow Irish actor Michael Fassbender on the project. Plot details are being kept under wraps but the cast, which also includes includes Cate Blanchett, will begin shooting in in May in London. Brosnan’s career is red hot at the moment and is rightfully nominated for an upcoming IFTA award for this performance in THE LAST RIFLEMAN.
